“EMMA” – JANE AUSTEN

A cura di Emma Traversone, 4^R
When choosing the best books as regards romantic novels, Jane Austen’s “Emma” has to be among the most successful ones. Published in 1815 and well appreciated by the public opinion, it is one of the most famous novels written by this British author.
It is set in the nineteenth century and the main character is Emma, a beautiful, intelligent and respectful girl who lives with her father in the rich society. Her well-to-do family lets her live a completely happy and quiet life and her self-assurance is one of her main features. She manages the world that surrounds her with decision and also a bit of conceit. She believes she is never going to get married because, aged twenty-one, she has not fallen in love yet. Moreover, she is independent and likes to make decisions on her own.
She loves making plans for her friends and, when she has found the perfect rich husband (Mr. Elton) for her little devoted friend Harriet, she succeeds in persuading her, even though Harriet loves Mr. Martin, a farmer. However, Mr. Elton loves Emma, and is kind to her insecure friend just to please his beloved. As a consequence, a lot of misunderstandings are created: the only one who dares criticize Emma’s behaviour is her soft-hearted, honest and reliable friend Mr. Knightly and the girl, having understood all the problems, solves them, so a happy ending, not lacking in twists and turns, is certainly the perfect final for this book.
I truly recommend it because it makes us think about the important value of friendship, love and destiny which surprises us anytime. Furthermore, it gives a perfect insight into people’s life in the nineteenth century and it is interesting to reflect on the future and plans which hardly come true because fate is always unpredictable, but it might be better than expected.
